Hadley Wood house, North London.
In this project, Andrew Wood Associates increased the width and the depth of the existing building significantly, to create a large family home in Hadley Wood in north London. The design included a large open plan living space with two storey dining space and large family kitchen at ground floor level and seven bedrooms over the first and second floors.
On entry to the building, a top lit three storey void opens up above the entry hall, with a folded staircase between first and second floor spiralling within the void above. The first floor landing, designed like a bridge, allows views through the house front to backend across the green belt beyond. The living spaces are delineated through subtle changes in level, to create an open plan space with subtle divisions of space. A stepped patio and tiered garden design to the rear of the dwelling manages the significant change in land level between the internal living spaces and the rear garden, with tiered planters, inset seating and generous steps.
Construction was undertaken by the client on a self build basis through 2010-11 and the patio design was completed in 2020.
